Let us look at some of the most common flea treatments used by people and compare them based on their effectiveness, dosage and the cost involved.
The first thing that we will look at is the flea chemical called Advantage. This is to be administered once a month. The cost for it is approximately $50 for a four month treatment. The advantages of this are that it is only administered once a month and kills fleas in twelve hours flat. Even when you continue to shampoo or bath your pet the effectiveness does not wear off. The disadvantages of this form of treatment are that the pet is exposed to chemicals, it needs to be prescribed by a vet and is not as effective as an internal medication.
Next, we will look at Sentinel Flavor tablets. This is an oral flea medication for dogs especially. The medicine is extremely effective and doesn’t expose the pet to too many drugs. It is effective in controlling other kinds of infestations such as hookworm, whipworm and roundworm too. The cons with this medicine are that they do not go on to kill adult fleas. Also people don’t prefer this when compared to topical medications.
The third product is Program. This is to be given once a month and is extremely effective at keeping the flea infestation under control. It is predominantly used for cats and is easy to administer. The disadvantage is that it does not kill adult fleas.
All the three products that we have looked at above are those that prevent flea re-infestation in your pets. Also, they need to be used once a month which is convenient for the pet and the pet owner. So ensure that what you choose for your pet suits your pet and the circumstances.
